At Vet Tech Plus, we see firsthand how important good dental care is for both dogs and cats. Oral health is often overlooked, yet dental disease is one of the most common conditions affecting pets. By the age of three, most dogs and cats show signs of dental disease — and without proper care, it can impact far more than just their breath.
Why Dental Care Is So Important
Dental disease begins with plaque, which hardens into tartar if not removed. Over time, this leads to gingivitis, periodontal disease, tooth loss, and pain. Bacteria from the mouth can also enter the bloodstream and potentially affect vital organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys.
Signs of dental disease may include:
Bad breath
Red or bleeding gums
Yellow or brown buildup on teeth
Dropping food or chewing on one side
Pawing at the mouth
Decreased appetite or changes in behaviour
Cats, in particular, are very good at hiding pain, which makes routine dental care and regular checks even more important.
